Local SEO for dentists in India: a practical guide for one clinic
How a single dental clinic in an Indian city can show up in Google Maps, local search and AI answers, without an agency retainer or a content factory.
Most people who need a dentist do not search for "dentist". They search for "dentist near me", "root canal in Malviya Nagar" or "painless tooth extraction Jaipur", usually on a phone, often when something already hurts. The clinic that shows up in the map results and the first few links gets the call.
That is what local SEO for dentists is about: being the clinic that shows up for those searches in your area. It is not about ranking nationally, and it does not need a large budget. It needs a complete Google Business Profile, a website that answers patients' questions, and steady, honest signals that you are a real clinic in a real place.
This guide is written for a single clinic, or a small group, in an Indian city. The same ideas work elsewhere.
Why local SEO is different from regular SEO
Local searches are answered from two places at once: the map pack, usually three clinics with a map, and the regular results under it. Google decides the map pack mainly on three things:
- Relevance: does your profile and site match what was searched?
- Distance: how close are you to the person searching, or to the area they named?
- Prominence: how well known and trusted are you, judged from reviews, links, mentions and your site?
You cannot change distance. You can change the other two, and that is where your effort should go.
Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right
Your Google Business Profile is the most important page you own for local search, and it is not on your website. Treat it that way.
- Pick the right primary category. "Dentist" or the most specific category that fits, such as "Orthodontist" or "Dental implants periodontist" if that is truly your main work. Add secondary categories for other services.
- Use your real name. Do not stuff keywords into the business name. It breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Fill in everything. Hours (including holiday hours), phone, website, services with short descriptions, attributes such as wheelchair access, and appointment links.
- Add real photos. The outside of the building so people can find it, the reception, the treatment rooms and the team. Before-and-after photos only with written patient consent.
- Post updates. A short post every week or two: a new service, a holiday schedule, an answer to a common question. It shows the profile is alive.
We cover the profile in more detail in our guide to Google Business Profile for doctors.
Step 2: Make your name, address and phone consistent everywhere
Your clinic's name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, your Google profile, Practo, Justdial, Facebook and any other listing. Small differences, such as an old phone number or "Sector 14" in one place and "Sec-14" in another, make it harder for search engines to be sure all these listings are the same clinic.
Make a simple spreadsheet of every listing you have, check each one, and fix the mismatches. Close duplicate listings where you can.
Step 3: Build service pages patients actually need
Your website should have one page for each main treatment you want patients to find you for: root canal, implants, braces, clear aligners, whitening, children's dentistry. Each page should answer the questions a patient has before booking:
- What is the treatment, in plain words?
- Who is it for, and who is it not for?
- How many visits, and how long does each take?
- Does it hurt, and what is recovery like?
- What does it cost, or what changes the cost?
- Who at the clinic does it, and what are their qualifications?
Write the answers in plain language. Put the most direct answer first. Name your area in the text naturally ("our clinic in Vaishali Nagar"), not as a list of keywords at the bottom of the page.
If you cover several neighbourhoods, a page per area can help, but only if each page has something genuinely local on it, such as directions, parking or the landmark near you. Copying the same page with a different area name in it does not help and can hurt.
Step 4: Ask for reviews, and answer them
Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals, and patients read them. Ask every satisfied patient, at the right moment: after a successful treatment, not while they are still in the chair. A short message with a direct link to your review page works better than a request at the reception desk.
Reply to reviews, good and bad. Thank people briefly. For a bad review, answer calmly, do not share any medical details, and offer to talk offline. Future patients read your replies as much as the reviews.
Do not buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. It breaks Google's rules and patients can usually tell.
Step 5: Earn a few local mentions
Prominence also comes from being mentioned elsewhere: a local news story, a school dental camp, a residents' association newsletter, a listing on the local doctors' association site. You do not need many. A handful of real, local mentions does more than dozens of low-quality directory links.
Step 6: Prepare for AI answers too
Patients are starting to ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers which clinic to visit. These tools search the web and quote pages that answer the question directly. The same work helps here: clear service pages, consistent details, real reviews and named experts. We wrote about this in how to get cited by ChatGPT.
How much is enough?
For one clinic, a realistic rhythm is:
- a fully complete Google Business Profile, checked monthly;
- a post on the profile every week or two;
- one new or improved service page a month;
- a steady habit of asking for reviews and replying to them.
Search interest is there. Google Ads' estimate for October 2026 puts "local seo for dentists" at around 210 searches a month in India and 720 in the United States, and that is only the clinics researching it. The searches that matter are the thousands of patients looking for a dentist near them.
Where Antidote fits
Antidote drafts profile posts and articles from the clinic’s supplied brand context. It surfaces competitor findings from configured intelligence and review scans, with available findings in the latest brief. Missing AI mentions can help you plan an article addressing a gap in explanation. Anything you make with Create always waits for your Approve. For scheduled pieces, you choose the approval setting with the Antidote team: Review first, or publishing on your behalf. The clinic verifies the facts and checks publishing status. If that sounds useful, Book a 30-minute call.
